Valtteri Bottas' superb qualifying performance in Montreal has given Williams a major morale boost, says Claire Williams.
Bottas was admittedly powerless to do anything about maintaining the pace during the race, eventually finishing 14th, yet his excellent performance in tricky wet conditions during Saturday's qualifying definitely gave his team something to smile about.
"It has been a really good boost for morale. Really it has," deputy team principal Claire Williams told Autosport. "And I think that is really important when you work so hard and your team works so hard.
"You need those reminders of why you are doing it, so that was really good.
"In Monaco we found a direction for the car and for moving it forward, but we need to make a bigger impression than that. And I really hoped that we were going to score a few points [in Canada].
"No one had any expectations that we were going to finish on the podium, but to finish in the points would have been good. But the car eats its tyres really quickly and then there are other issues that came together to make us finish where we finished."
Williams are still pointless this season, but there is a genuine feeling that progress is being made.
"There is definitely a step forward, but we are still quite clearly not where we want to be and we still have a lot of work to do if we are going to really improve," Williams added.
"Everyone knows that and everyone knows what they need to do. We cannot hide from our track results on a Sunday afternoon, so we need to keep pushing and keep fighting.
"We have everything we need at Williams to do that. We just have to make sure that we do it."
