Aaro Vainio takes a win in the second GP3 race

The Finn makes a superb getaway and edges Korjus (2nd) and Neiderhauser (3rd)
The intense final day of the FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAÑA 2013 got under way this morning with the second GP3 race of the weekend. A magnificent manoeuvre afforded Aaro Vainio (Koiranen GP) to take the lead, which he managed to keep all the way to the end of this spectacular race.
Behind the young Finn, a heated tussle for podium positions developed. The safety car was forced out in lap 1 to have Melville McKee’s Bamboo Engineering crashed car removed from the track.
In a really close race, Vainio led with team mate Kevin Korjus and Briton Nick Yelloly (Carlin) behind. In lap 7, Vainio had managed to pull a gap from Korjus, while the chasing pack (with Yelloly, Fumanelli, Ellinas, Daly and Neiderhauser) battled for the third podium place.
With 5 laps to go, Italian David Fumanelli (Trident) tagged the back of Yelloly’s car and sent him into a spin, and Cypriot Tio Ellinas seized the opportunity and planted his Marussia Manor Racing car in third position. Despite his efforts, yesterday’s race winner cracked under the pressure of Patric Niederhauser (Jenzer Motorsport), who pipped him to third place and joined Vainio and Korjus on the podium. The two Koiranen GP drivers were almost two seconds apart at the finish line.
Local driver Carlos Sainz Jr (MW Arden) made an impressive start and climbed up the order from 15 th to 9 th position in the first lap. He continued to charge through the field for a 7 th place finish, collecting his maiden points (2) this season. Carmen Jordá (Bamboo Engineering) started in 22nd place and finished 20th fastest.
After the first inaugural races held at the Circuit de Catalunya, Tio Ellinas leads the GP3 championship with 39 points, followed by Patric Niederhauser (28) and Aaro Vainio (25).
